Aboriginal Health Services Wollongong

The District operates supplementary services for Aboriginal people which includes the Aboriginal Chronic Care Unit, and Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Child Health services. Aboriginal Health Workers (AHWs) are employed across a range of Community Health programs and services. Drawing on their knowledge of the local Aboriginal community they work collaboratively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams to achieve better health outcomes for Aboriginal people and communities, and play a key role in facilitating relationships between Aboriginal patients and other health professionals.

Aboriginal Health Workers (AHWs) are employed across a range of Hospital and Community Health programs and services. The District employs an Aboriginal Family Health Co-ordinator, an Aboriginal Mental Health Clinical leader and an Aboriginal Healthy Hearts project manager that lead specific strategic programs to improve outcomes across mental health, violence prevention and better cardiac care.

Principal Aboriginal Health Workers (PAHWs) provide emotional, social and cultural support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families admitted to hospitals within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.
