Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health Strategy (AMIHS) Coffs Harbour

The Aboriginal Maternal Infant Health Service (AMIHS) provides culturally appropriate community-based maternity care in pregnancy and the postnatal period up to eight weeks.

The aim of AMIHS is to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal women and non-Aboriginal women with Aboriginal partners during pregnancy and birth. The care is provided in a partnership model by midwives and Aboriginal Health Workers/Aboriginal Health Education Officers.

AMIHS includes community development activities that provide a holistic approach to developing the health and wellbeing of the women and families involved. The foundations of this strategy incorporate the principles of primary health care and were guided by Aboriginal Community consultations.
