John Hunter Hospital (JHH)

The John Hunter Hospital and John Hunter Children's Hospital is the principal referral centre and a tertiary hospital for Newcastle, and northern New South Wales, Australia. The 796 bed hospital is the main teaching hospital of the University of Newcastle.

The hospital contains the only trauma centre in New South Wales outside the Sydney Metropolitan Area, and has the busiest emergency department in the state.

With support from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and NSW Ambulance, the hospital provides a retrieval service for critically ill patients from the Hunter and North Coast.​

Opening Hours

John Hunter Hospital operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Normal business hours are 8:30am – 5pm weekdays.

Visiting hours are between 8am – 8pm, with a rest period between 1pm – 3pm. During the rest period, staff will return patients to their beds, close blinds and quieten the ward. We ask that relatives and visitors respect this period by vacating the ward or remaining quiet so that patients can sleep or rest if needed.
