SVH Aboriginal Health Unit

Our Aboriginal Health Unit provides support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inpatient and outpatients including families and carers. We provide practical, social and wellbeing support, as well as support to seek accommodation for patients and families from regional, rural and remote areas.

The Aboriginal Health team also works closely with the Allied Health Team to support Aboriginal and Torres Islander patients. We work with all staff to deliver on our Hospital’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), and our team is dedicated to assisting with working towards Closing the Gap targets on:

• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Life Expectancy

• Halving the gap for Indigenous education

• Halving the gap in employment outcomes.

Our Hospital staff have received ‘Respecting the Difference’ training to ensure that all of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and guests are welcomed to a culturally respectful environment.

We offer a private Gadigal Place for quiet time and family conferences.

St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney works in partnership with the following Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to provide and promote preventative health services including:

• Woolloomooloo Aboriginal Community – Walla Mulla Family & Community Service

• National Rugby league - Tackling Smoking in Aboriginal Communities

• Redfern Aboriginal Medical Service

• Outreach services across NSW
